Newcastle Travel Guide: Best Things to See and Do
Newcastle Overview
Newcastle is a Support Legend in Apex Legends, introduced in Season 13. A heroic defender with a team-first kit, he excels at creating safe positions, reviving under pressure, and fortifying ground during pushes or retreats. He is unlockable with 12,000 Legend Tokens or 750 Apex Coins.
Abilities
Mobile Shield (Tactical)
Throw a drone that projects a moveable energy shield.
- Maximum throw distance ~25m; the drone travels to your reticle.
- Hitting an enemy on throw deals 20 damage.
- Duration ~20 seconds unless destroyed; it hums loudly before fading.
- Reactivate to retarget the drone without changing the shield’s current orientation; within ~5m you can reorient up to 90 degrees.
- Two shield panels (upper and lower), each with 500 HP; panels can be destroyed separately.
- Think ahead—its movement is slow, so position it where the fight will happen.
- Treat practical downtime as ~35 seconds to account for repositioning.
- Deploy close, then redirect for faster on-demand cover in tight spaces.
- While escaping, throw at your feet and redirect forward to block shots from behind.
Retrieve the Wounded (Passive)
Drag downed allies while reviving and protect them with your Revive Shield. Tap once to start; tap again to cancel.
- Revive Shield HP scales with your Knockdown Shield:
- Level 1: 200
- Level 2: 300
- Level 3/4: 500
- Knockdown Shield regenerates after ~1 second (about 1 HP per 0.25s).
- Some actions end the revive (e.g., falling, Gravity Cannons, jump pads, Gravity Lift).
- You don’t need to hold the button—use the free finger dexterity to reposition or retarget Mobile Shield.
- Reorient both the Revive and Mobile Shield to block sightlines as enemies reposition.
- The revive is loud and visible; dropping your Knockdown Shield can reduce visual tell (audio remains).
Castle Wall (Ultimate)
Leap to an ally or target area and slam down to create a fortified stronghold.
- Range: 35m to ground; 75m if targeting a squadmate or their Death Box.
- You can turn mid-leap to reorient the wall; enemies near the landing are knocked back.
- Max one wall at a time (new replaces old).
- 9 segments, each 750 HP; end and center segments are larger. Short segments chain-destroy nearby shorts.
- Front side electrifies for ~30 seconds, stunning and dealing 20 damage to climbing enemies.
- If the wall is not created (e.g., you’re downed), ~70% Ultimate charge is refunded.
- While energized, incoming enemy projectiles from the front can be intercepted; ordnance thrown from behind by allies is unaffected.
- You don’t need direct line-of-sight to jump to a teammate—if a viable path exists, you can target them (even above you).
- Use Castle Wall to anchor late-game zones and deny pushes through chokepoints.
Fortified (Perk)
Incoming damage reduced by 15%. Not slowed by bullets. Headshots are unaffected.
Legend Upgrades
Legend Upgrades (introduced in Season 20) add perks as you level your Evo Armor in Battle Royale. Choose one per level, up to two total:
- Level 2: Thick Shield (+250 Mobile Shield HP) or Mobile Support (faster Mobile Shield).
- Level 3: Miracle Worker (revives grant HP regen) or Stronghold (increased Castle Wall HP and energized duration).
Lore
Lamont Craig was a loving dad with a secret: he was actually Jackson Williams. Once a top IMC soldier, Jackson went AWOL after refusing orders he believed would doom his crew. Presumed dead after a ship explosion, he used the chance to disappear—keeping his sister Anita (Bangalore) safe by staying away.
Years later, “Lamont” settled in Harris Valley, married, and discovered the town relied on its local “knight,” Newcastle. When a gang called the Forgotten Families came to collect on Newcastle’s hidden debts and killed him, Jackson stepped in. Using his military training, he fought off the thugs—but more were coming.
To protect the town, Jackson took up Newcastle’s armor and identity and set his sights on the Apex Games. With prize money on the line, he could pay the town’s debts—if he could avoid being discovered by Bangalore.

May 10, 2022 Patch (Season 13)
- Newcastle introduced.
Development
- Jackson was once planned as “Downfall,” an anarchist protester with bomb-throwing abilities, slated for 2020–2021, but the concept was shelved due to timing and design concerns.
- Newcastle’s kit draws from a prototype named “Axiom,” a defensive push concept centered on a mobile shield and breach-and-clear play—deemed too selfish at the time, later refined into Newcastle’s team utility.
Teasers
- Jackson Williams first appeared as Bangalore’s missing brother in background lore.
- Newcastle name-dropped as early as a Season 4 teaser.
- Pre-Season 13 tweets teased Jackson’s autopsy, Bangalore’s departure, and the farewell party.
- Season 13 trailers confirmed Jackson as Newcastle and showcased gameplay and character reveals.
Datamined and Leaked Data
A major March 2022 leak revealed Newcastle’s model, abilities, and cosmetics. The only notable difference from release: an early Mobile Shield variant that was unbreakable.
Trivia
- Mobile Shield resembles the portable shields used by grunts and the Hard Cover boost in Titanfall 2.
- Newcastle is the only Legend with a finisher that is exclusively used against a specific Legend (Bangalore), effectively giving him two defaults.
- Early bios suggested he left the IMC due to its war crimes; this was later corrected to emphasize disobeying orders to save his crew.
